A Thread Letter between two people.
When words are not needed.
The Returning Keeper begins with a length of material, two colours of thread and another person.
You begin the stitching, then entrust the cloth to someone you choose. For a little while it is in their keeping. They spend some of their own time stitching into it before sending it home.
What returns is no longer quite the fabric that left.
Eventually, the shared stitching becomes a small textile wrap for keeping something you treasure.
The cloth between us
Most Keepers begin as a relationship between a person and a piece of cloth.
The Returning Keeper makes room for someone else.
Something that matters to you is entrusted to another person's care. They aren't being asked to improve it or even to understand what you were making. They are simply invited to spend some of their ordinary time with it before placing it back in your hands.
What it keeps is yours to decide
The shared cloth eventually becomes a softly padded textile wrap, tied closed and ready to keep something that matters to you.
Mine became a home for a well-loved deck of cards. Yours might hold letters or photographs, a small notebook, sewing things, jewellery or a few personal keepsakes.
There is no stitched design to copy and no finished surface to reproduce. The sewing develops through two different pairs of hands, so every Returning Keeper will carry its own marks.
The Keeper does not decide what is precious.
