The Warmth Keeper
A little warmth, made by hand.
A free knitting pattern for children in Ukraine
A simple way to turn leftover wool into something warm and useful.
I've been using leftover wool to knit simple tummy warmers for children in Ukraine, thinking about the cold winter ahead and how a small, practical layer might offer a little extra warmth.
Inspired by the traditional Japanese haramaki, the Warmth Keeper is a soft, stretchy woollen band worn around the tummy and lower back, beneath clothing.
It's knitted in a simple 2 × 2 rib, using chunky wool or combinations of thinner yarns held together. I've made three using different leftover yarns, and each has its own character.
I wanted to share the pattern freely in case anyone else wants to make one too.
The illustrated PDF includes my three examples, suggestions for combining yarns, adaptable knitting instructions and a printable label for donated garments.
I'm sending my own Warmth Keepers to New Forest for Ukraine, who have a knitting and crochet project. If you'd like to make one, you can find a suitable collection or organisation wherever you live.
There is no target or expectation. Just an invitation to turn a little leftover wool into something useful.
